Lab Descriptions

Laboratory Activities are designed to provide students the opportunity to determine as many of the laws and principles studied in the course as possible. Students are expected to be able to conclude the principle or law being studied from their laboratory work PRIOR to any discussion of the law in class.

Unit 1 - Kinematics
1) Constant Velocity Vehicle (hands-on)
Using a meter stick, stop watch and paper clips, students will produce a position vs. time graph for a battery operated car to determine if the car moves with a constant velocity and if so, to determine the velocity. (30 min.)

2) Constant Acceleration (hands-on)
Using a PASCar, lab track, and motion detector, students will produce a position vs. time graph, as well as a velocity vs. time graph. The students will use these graphs to determine if this car is moving at a constant acceleration, and if so, to determine the acceleration of the car. (30 min.)

Unit 2 - Dynamics
3) Modified Atwood’s Machine (hands-on)
Using a horizontal lab track, super pulley, PASCar, electronic balance and hanging mass, students will determine the relationship between system mass, acceleration and force. (30 min.)

4) Modified Atwood’s Machine (hands-on)
Using an inclined lab track, PASCar, super pulley, hanging mass, electronic balance, and meter stick, students will predict the time for the car to move a predetermined distance up or down the track. (30 min.)

5) Meter stick balance lab (hands-on)
Using meter sticks, with mass clamps, students will predict and then balance the meter stick on a fulcrum at varying points. (30 min.)

Unit 3 - Work, Energy, Power
6) Inclined Plane – potential energy conservation (hands-on)
Using a PASCar, lab track, electronic balance, motion sensor, and meter stick, students will determine the amount energy stored in a spring attached to the PASCar, to predict the highest point reachable by the PASCar if released at the bottom of an inclined plane. (30 min.)

7) Spring Lab – Vertical Oscillations (hands-on)
Using a motion sensor, hanging mass, Hookian spring, and a meter stick, students will determine the spring constant of the Hookian spring, using conservation of energy. (60 min.)

Unit 4 - Momentum
8) Impulse – change in momentum lab (hands-on)
Using a force sensor, photo gates, lab track, and PASCar, students will determine the relationship between the force applied to the car and the change in momentum of the car. (60 min.)

9) 1-D Collisions (Explosions, Inelastic Collisions, Elastic Collisions) (hands-on)
Using 2 PASCars, lab track, and 2 photo gates, students will verify conservation of momentum. (60 min.)

Unit 5 - Simple Harmonic Oscillations/Universal Gravitation
10) Pendulum Lab (hands-on)
Using 4 pendulum bobs, a meter stick, photo gate, and varying string lengths, students will derive the expression for finding the period of a simple pendulum at small angles. (60 min.)

11) Superhero Lab (hands-on)
Using a battery operated “flying” superhero and 2 meter sticks, students will determine the period of rotation of the superhero. (30 min.)

Unit 6 - Waves and Optics
12) Demo – Double Slit Interference Pattern
Students will observe double slit interference pattern produced by laser passing through closely placed slits in transparency.

13) Slinky Lab – Wave Reflection (hands-on)
Using a double length slinky, students will reproduce transverse and longitudinal waves and study reflection at a fixed end and reflection at a free end. (60 min.)

14) Resonance Tube (hands-on)
Using a series of tuning forks, large resonance tubes, and meter stick, students will observe resonance, and predict the harmonic value for the sound they heard based upon the length of the tube. (60 min.)

15) Mirror/Thin Lens Lab (hands-on)
Using an Optics kit, students will observe reflection off flat and curved mirrors and refraction through a variety of transparent mediums including converging and diverging thin lenses. (60 min.)

Unit 7 - Atomic and Nuclear Physics
16) Demo – Emission spectra of several elements
Using a variety of elemental tubes and a spectrometer, students were able to observe through a spectroscope the emission spectra of several elements.

Unit 8 - Electricity
17) Circuit Lab (hands-on)
Using CASTLE kits, students will predict the current through each wire in a given circuit, based on the resistors and the battery cells. (30 min.)

Unit 9 - Magnetism
n/a

Unit 10 - Fluids
18) Flow Rate of Water Lab (hands-on)
Using a ruler and Bernoulli’s equation, students will determine the initial velocity of water flowing out the side of a container of water through a small circular hole. (30 min.)

Unit 11 - Thermodynamics
n/a
