Q: Does anyone have books to recommend for a 6 year old boy who can readily read at a 4-5th grade level? He spooks easily, so many of the exciting books at his reading level provoke nightmares (e.g. Lightning Thief and Harry Potter).

Answers:

My son just turned 7 and won't even watch Disney movies because something bad always happens to a character he cares for, so we fight the same issue as your family for scary concerns.

That said, my son has loved all the Diary of Wimpy Kid series, Artemis Fowl series (he didn't want to read them originally fearing the
worst, but loves them now), the Captain Underpants (though I discourage that one, too many stupid antics...he and his sister emulated the ketchup packet under the toilet seat trick--it was pretty hilarious, but I had to act the grouchy mommy just the
same and make them clean it up), Pokemon and other graphic novels, Biography of Famous American books, Beverly Cleary books like Henry and Beezus any science related encyclopedias for kids
Millicent Min
most books that have the gold or silver childrens book award seals on them,
Dragon Slayer Academy series,
Island of the Blue Dophins (sad though)
and a favorite is the Dangerous Book for Boys.

Some of these are quite easy and we are really entering a tough phase now, finding stories that aren't too emotional or creepy. We are aiming toward Gentle Ben, Over the Mountain, Tuck Everlasting, Itype.

Magic Shop Books by Bruce Coville, my son read them when he was 7 and really liked the series
The Geronimo Stilton books are fun reads with a higher reading level - maybe 3rd/ 4th not 5th grade but certainly age appropriate
Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull
The Roald Dahl books (some might be a little tense)
Zoobreak by Gordon Korman (quite a few Kormans may work)
My son loved the Series of Unfortunate Events when he was 7 but he's not skittish (although he refuses to read Goosebumps) so I'm not sure if these would be too scary
some of the Gary Paulson books like Hatchet and Mudshark
Sideways Stories by Sachar were a huge hit for my son

Go back to an older era where the books were both gentler and used higher level vocabulary. The L Frank Baum Oz books were a huge
favorites. I'd also recommend the Moomin books by Tove Jansson. THey are very gentle.

My daughter is also extremely sensitive with a very high reading level. Here are a few I haven't seen mentioned yet

The Charlie Bone series (Nimmo) is similar to Harry Potter but less intense and scary. My daughter has been able to enjoy the first two so far.
Bartleby of the Mighty Mississippi (Shalant) (I think there is at least one more Bartleby book and the author has several other books)
Nurk and also the Dragonbreath series by Vernon

DD hasn't read them yet, but I thought the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Wrede) were the perfect level of excitement but not frightening, but their reading level may be a bit of a stretch for your son.
Lloyd Alexander has a lot of books that might work but they might be right on the edge of too scary.
Time Cat was popular here, and I liked the Illyrian Adventure but DD hasnt' read it yet.
I've also heard recommendations for The Penderwicks and also books by Edith Nesbit but can't vouch for them personally.

Peter and the Starcatchers series

Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome - series

Dealing with Dragons - Patricia Wrede - series

My daughters and I created a book review site for highly sensitive advanced young readers. Until about 2 years ago, my younger daughter
would become furious if too much violence occurred in a book. Here is a list of books that the child you describe might like:
