Вопрос вызван, как ни странно, все тем же предметом Social Science. Они там собираются начинать geography unit и к нему есть большое задание на полтора месяца. Одним из пунктов можно прочитать книгу:
Read a book (not a children’s or young adult novel or biography) by a foreign author about another country or culture. The best of these are available translated into English. This activity is worth 3 units. You will turn in 3 journal entries, each about a page in length, from 1/3 of the way through the book, 2/3, and at the end. Reflect on culture and the relationship between that character and his/her culture. Turn in a picture of yourself with the book. Recommended authors:

Булгаков есть в списке Гардиана, остальное там совсем уж не детское. В принципе, можно вообще обойтись без книги, там есть еще варианты сходить в музей, в национальный ресторан, посмотреть фильм (в списке есть "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" и "Последний Император" :)).
