1. Is it possible to take a break in the course? As I understand it, for distance learners there is no set schedule, so will it be OK to start now, study for 2 or 3 months, take a break for a month in August and then come back?
Yes, this is not a problem at all. The online classes are very flexible and can accommodate just about any schedule. Taking a break is fine, and you don’t have to pay for the time you are away from the course.
2. What is the difference between the regular class and the honors?
The honors students are expected to have a higher degree of mastery of the material. There are a couple of topics that they are required to do that the non-honors students may skip. For most chapters, the honors students have an extra page of homework and extra page on the chapter test, and these extra pages have more difficult problems.
3. I know you class is not labeled as an AP class, but do you know how close it is to the AP Physics B? Giancoli is usually used for AP Physics B, but from your Syllabus I can see that couple topics are missing (fluid mechanics, nuclear physics, probably something else), but do you feel that the material that is covered is at the AP level? If not AP Physics B, will at least AP Physics I be passable after this class?
This is not an AP class. AP classes are deliberately college level classes, and this is a high school level class by design. As you say, the Giancoli book is often used for college level classes. In my class we do not cover the whole book. (In fact, in college classes the whole book would never be covered in a single course).
This course is not aimed at preparing students for the AP exam. I have had some students take my course and then take the AP Physics exam and do well, but there was additional study involved. My course does cover most of the topics in AP Physics 1, but I have not had a chance to study the new AP Physics material closely. Following this course with the AP Physics 1 exam would be reasonable, as long it was understood that the AP Exam will be harder than my course (college level versus high school level) and that preparing the AP Exam should involve some additional work, such as working through a good test prep book.
4. I know you don’t have an official accreditation, but can you issue an unofficial certificate with a grade at the completion of the class? Coupled with a passed AP exam that should be enough for a home-made HS transcript.
Yes, I give a signed grade report at the end of the course, as well as regular progress reports along the way. Parents and students also receive all of the graded homework assignments and tests by email.
5. Labs. Do you grade lab write-ups as well or only the homework problems and tests?
I do grade the labs. There are 10 labs that are part of the course. I do not emphasize formal lab write ups, but each lab has one more pages of graphs, analysis, and questions to answer, and which get turned in to be graded. Let me know if you want to see the lab exercises.
